1 , 232 , 143 . 21
Duże liczby
Duże liczby dzielimy na sekcje setek i tysięcy:
400,000 = four hundred thousand (bez s w liczbie mnogiej)
Jeżeli liczba zawiera mniejsze, używamy spójnika “and” (tylko w British English):
450,000 = four hundred and fifty thousand
400,360 = four hundred thousand and three hundred and sixty
598,347 = five hundred and ninety-eight thousand, three hundred and forty-seven
1,300,402 = one million three hundred thousand, four hundred and two (brak “and” po milionach)
1m = one million / a million
3bn = three billion
7.5bn = seven point five billion
1 billion
W British English billion oznacza milion milionów = 1,000,000,000,000 = 1012
W American English billion oznacza tysiąc milionów = 1,000,000,000 = 109
Wymowa 0
Tutaj ciekawostka, cyfra zero może w angielskim być wymawiana na wiele sposobów, w zależności od kontekstu.
2:0 (wynik meczu piłki nożnej) = two nil
30:0 (wynik w tenisie) = thirty love
604 7721 (numer telefonu) = six oh four seven seven two one
0.4 (liczba) = nought point four / zero point four
0.25 (liczba) = nought point two five / zero point two five (po kropce cyfry czytamy osobno)
0.75 (liczba) = nought point seven five / zero point seven five
0C (temperatura) = zero degrees
Ułamki i procenty
1/2 = one half / a half
1/3 = one third
1/4 = one quarter
1/5 = one fifth
1/ 6 = one sixth
3/5 = three fifths (s na końcu jeżli liczba w liczniku ułamka jest mnoga)
2 i 1/2 = two and a half
1.5% = one point five percent
0.3% = (nought / zero) point three percent
2:1 = two to one
Wymowa działań matematycznych
+ (plus)
2 + 1 = 3 (two plus one equals three)
- (minus / take away)
5 – 3 = 2 (five minus three equals two / five take away three equals two)
x (multiplied by / times)
2 x 3 = 6 (two multiplied by three equals six / two times three equals six)
/ (divided by)
6 / 3 = 2 (six divided by three equals two)
Daty
Daty możemy wymawiać czytając dzień przed miesiącem lub miesiąc przed dniem:
The first of January / January the first.
Trzeba pamiętać, aby używać liczebników porządkowych:
(The first, the second, the third, the fourth, the fifth, the twenty-second, the thirty-first etc.)
Lata
Lata do roku 2000 czytamy dzieląc je na dwie części:
1965 = nineteen sixty-five
1871 = eighteen seventy-one
1999 = nineteen ninety-nine
Powyżej roku 2000 mówimy “two thousand and -” w British English:
2001 = two thousand and one
2009 = two thousand and nine
Waluta
$1 = a dollar
$2 = two dollars
$2.50 = two dollars fifty (bez point)
E250 = two hundred and fifty euros
